GIF Images

GIF images use a proprietary (patented) method for compressing images. The format is a 256 colour palette based image format, making it suitable for drawn or computer generated images. The amount of compression depends on the amount of detail in the original image.

GIF images can also have transparent components and can also contain multiple images to make animations. Transparency is dealt with later in this tutorial.

The examples below demonstrate the overall compression that can be achieved for a variety of image types. Each image is 200 pixels wide by 300 pixel high.
